F. 349v of manuscript Ambr. C 222 inf. marks the transition from the eighth Idyll (vv. 71-93) to the ninth (vv. 1-17). The page highlights the skill of the so-called “mercenary scribe” in balancing poetic text and scholia, achieving a harmonious layout even in the presence of a particularly dense commentary apparatus arranged as a frame along the upper and outer margins. As in the following folio (350r), the scholia on the eighth Idyll come to an end in the outer margin almost exactly where the poem itself concludes, roughly halfway down the page – a clear sign of the effort to maintain visual and structural consistency between text and commentary. The lower half of the folio, containing the opening of the ninth Idyll, is likewise carefully arranged, with its scholia unfolding in a nearly symmetrical fashion to those of the preceding poem.
