Internal Layout and Contents

The Iliadic text and the pseudo-Psellian paraphrasis are arranged side by side in two columns of 28 lines per page, with the paraphrasis consistently placed on the right. The paraphrasis regularly occupies more space than the Homeric text, within a written area averaging 220 × 155 mm, distributed approximately as 60 + 15 + 80 mm. Each book opens with the heading: Ἰλιάδος [book letter] Ὁμήρου ῥαψωδίας. The hypothesis for each book is written across the full page in a smaller module; similarly, the scholia pertaining to each book are for the most part copied densely across the full page at the end of each rhapsody, with a narrower interlineation (c. 3 mm) and a variable number of lines (averaging around 45 per page). The scholia are introduced by the title ἱστορίαι [book letter] Ὁμήρου ῥαψωδίας. Cross-references between the main text and scholia are indicated by Greek alphabetical numerals, applied continuously within each book and placed in the margins of both the Homeric text and its corresponding scholia. More rarely, original scholia —typically short glosses — appear in the margins of either the Homeric text or the paraphrasis, and occasionally in the interlinear space. The use of various ink tones, ranging from black to brown and grey, points — together with other features — to a layered copying process carried out over an extended period. Notably, the paraphrasis is absent in the Boiotia, although the Iliadic text still occupies a single column.
